Video Explanation
NASA scientists and musicians transformed astronomical data into sound using a technique called sonification. Instead of viewing the Milky Way as an image, data from space is converted into notes, tones, and audio patterns that can be heard.
Different types of light can be represented by different instruments, while variations in brightness and energy change the pitch, volume, or timing of the sounds. As the data is scanned across the galaxy, it creates the audio experience you’re hearing.
This project was developed by Kim Arcand from the Chandra X-ray Observatory in collaboration with astrophysicist Matt Russo and musician Andrew Santaguida.
The result is a completely new way to explore the universe… not just with your eyes, but with your ears.
